The Minks

The Minks are here. Let’s boogie!

Nashville’s The Minks release a music video for their first single, “J. Walker Blues” off of their upcoming debut full-length, Light and Sweet, set to be released this Fall on Cafe Rooster Records.

The video is a continuous shot, filmed at local watering hole, Dee’s Country Cocktail Lounge, with a rotating cast of band members and friends supporting frontwoman Nikki Barber’s day-in-the-life performance. It is directed and edited by Houston Mathews of Slowhand Films. Watch as Barber invites you into the world of The Minks—a Cavern Club-esque millennial cabaret where the Mojo is served straight-up and inhibitions are left at the door. It’s an ideal setting for the band’s first single, “J. Walker Blues,” a haunting, pulsating, call-to-arms about staying present and alert to what’s going on around us. It was inspired by conversations with friends about watching stranger’s personalities shut off as they succumb to social norms and living on their phones. It was written as a simple stomp and clamp, but the full recording gives it a much more alarming, electric touch.

The Minks are Nashville’s “psychedelic-bloos” band, heavy on the rock and roll. We’re talking low-down, all the way, purse-lipped, eyes-shut, head-whirling kind of rock and roll. The band’s palpable sound has roots in every music fan’s top ten—from Lou to Patti to Creedence to Hank. Mixed with raw, jangly instrumentation and soulful saccharine vocals, it’s as much a throwback as it is an answer to the often overlooked underbelly of Nashville’s rock and roll scene.

Frontwoman Nikki Barber hightailed it to Music City a few years back in hopes of pursuing her musical birthright. With just a guitar and a dream, she created The Minks because she had to. It was this “create or combust” determination, and a little help from her friends, that made her vision a reality. With a few hundred miles, a couple of EPs, some new faces, and a slew of local buzz under their belts, the band sets out to release their first full-length record (Light and Sweet) this Fall and tour for forever. The Minks are here. Let’s boogie!
